A field study on the use of wireless M-Bus in four large cities found that 48.5% of the sensors do not use encryption. The sensors are used to record heating usage and hot and cold water consumption, among other things. The study also demonstrates the privacy risks of such data. Sleep/wake cycles and presence/absence can already be precisely determined from the data transmitted by a hot water meter. The results were presented at this year's Energy Informatics 2024 conference, which took place in Lugano, Switzerland, from October 9 to 11, 2024, and explained in a scientific publication.
