The IAI congratulates Fernanda Lourenzi de Vasconcellos for winning the special prize at the “Young Digital Talents Award 2023” of the buildingSMART regional groups in Baden-Württemberg.

The “Young Digital Talents Award” (YDTA) honors outstanding work by students and trainees who are working on innovative ideas for the digital construction value chain.

Ms Lourenzi studied civil engineering at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and wrote her bachelor's thesis entitled “Development of a software module for the optimization of openBIM models for additive manufacturing” at the IAI. The software module developed as part of the thesis is available as an open-source plug-in for the KITModelViewer application developed in the “Semantic Data Models” (SDM) working group. The module introduces a novel approach to the workflow for 3D printing of small-scale BIM models: An automated module for identifying and correcting errors before printing. It enables semantic filtering and checking of the building data as well as visualization of the scaled model with printer-specific parameters – such as the construction space and the diameter of the printing nozzle – based on the buildingSMART data format IFC.
